Although attending church as a child, it was not until I heard the gospel preached clearly that I first made a commitment to Christ in 1965. The early teaching I received was Reformed Evangelical, which I wholeheartedly embraced because of its reliance on the Word of God through inspiration of Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16). My passion from that time on was to see the fulfilment of John 17, for the unity of God’s people, for which Jesus prayed.
In 1972 I had my first encounter with the doctrine of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. There was a movement throughout evangelical congregations from different denominations to lay hold of this truth and to see a greater work of the Holy Spirit in believers’ lives. I became convinced that the gifts and ministries of the Holy Spirit had not ceased in the first century after Christ, as taught by some. These were very exciting times, when I was baptized in the Spirit and also later healed of migraine, a family affliction since childhood. To the present day it has never occurred again, praise God.
My passion for unity grew stronger and I was privileged to be appointed the lay secretary for the local Fellowship for Renewal. For a number of years I invited international speakers who came to teach more, at cross denominational meetings, about the renewing work of the Holy Spirit. It was a unique time for the church in the United Kingdom; and along with great blessing there were also many mistakes made, as leaders sought to understand this ‘new blessing’. That was because it wasn’t new at all; it went all the way back to Pentecost and the birth of the church. It was just that some leaders did not understand that every fresh experience had to be seen through the lens of the Word of God. Forty years later some of those mistakes are still being made.
Although part of a local team of church leaders my desire was to take up the pastorate full time. It was at that time the Lord made it clear that I was to concentrate on a particular congregation, that of my family. Though that may seem strange, it is biblical (1 Timothy 3:1-8). It is my joy to report that all my four children are serving the Lord, two in full time ministry, and all of the twelve grandchildren have made professions of faith. You see a man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps (Proverbs 16:9).
In 1992 I was invited by the Rev. John Watson to take up full time ministry with Vinesong Ministries, a multi-racial, multi-denominational ministry; bringing Worship and the Word to the nations and with a passion to see churches come together in unity. I had the specific role of International Ministry Coordinator which I was privileged to carry out for twenty-two years. The purpose in that role was organizational and to encourage leaders to embrace the vision, when making an invitation, so that many would be saved, healed and delivered. Through God’s faithfulness that has happened to literally hundreds of thousands of souls during the past 38 years.
I was ordained Pastor in 2004, to be a pastor amongst pastors. I am an accredited minister with Churches in Communities International (CIC), a respected Free Church body whose headquarters are based in the United Kingdom. The ministry of Vinesong has been in many different cultural and denominational settings which has given me insight into the good and not so good practices that churches have built into their fabric. There is a tendency to look for some new formula or the latest fad that is gripping the churches or the desire to find short cuts to a new and different kind of experience.
This leads to the mistake of measuring spiritual success by using worldly thinking, which still pervades churches everywhere. Yes, there are exciting moves of God still taking place, but it is for the next generation to understand them wisely. Our purpose remains and that is to change the destiny of the people around us, to lead them from darkness to light. To make disciples of Christ out of converts and to have a transforming effect on our communities. That purpose for the church is 2,000 years old. To this end I trust that serving the Global Wisdom Academy will help a new generation of leaders to fulfil their purposes.
